Overview

LGBT individuals who work in California are protected from workplace harassment, discrimination, a hostile environment, and inappropriate behavior under the Department of Fair Employment and Housing Act. Supervisors who harass employees, or who do not prevent harassment from occurring, can be held accountable under California law. This online training course teaches supervisors what actions and behaviors are considered illegal under Senate Bill 396.

This course illustrates prohibited workplace situations. For example, inappropriate behavior towards persons who are LGBT can take many forms. The use of demeaning or offensive names, telling jokes that are degrading, making derogatory comments, and excluding co-workers are all inappropriate and should not be allowed in the workplace.

This course also details the other directives in California that protect LGBT workers. Such as, persons who are LGBT have the right to use facilities that align with their gender identity or gender expression, and not based on their sex at birth. Employers are also required to provide single-occupancy restrooms with gender-neutral signage.

Employees who have been harassed or discriminated against can report it to the Department of Fair Employment and Housing. The DFEH will investigate, and if needed will provide legal assistance. This course explains this process.
