Congress dramatically increased workplace rights by passing the Family Medical Leave Act, or FMLA, in 1993. Under the law, certain qualified employees are able to take up to 12 weeks of job-protected leave to care for their own, or a qualified family member’s, serious medical condition. The FMLA regulations may seem confusing, however, as not all employees (or medical conditions) qualify for leave. There are also certain required steps to take prior to taking leave, and you may not even be able to take leave if you are too integral to your company’s operation. This training video explores all the details about the FMLA, as well as the responsibilities employees and employers have under the law.
This course takes employees through all the ins and outs of the FMLA, including eligibility, coverage, employee benefits and job reinstatement. The course explains what qualifies and a serious health condition and what a qualifying military exigency is. Each employee has reporting requirements under the law, and each employer has notifications requirements as well. The employee may also be required to pass a fitness for duty examination prior to his or her return. This course instructs you as to these, and other, key elements of the FMLA.
Laws can often be intimidating, and the FMLA is no different. Once you drill down into core principals, however, you will discover its step-by-step nature, as well as its overarching purpose: to expand an employee’s basic rights at the workplace. Utilize the materials provided here and gain a better understanding of the FMLA and how you can exercise those rights.
