Caught-between Hazards: Construction’s Fatal Four
More than 5,000 construction workers are killed and over 150,000 are injured each year. To make the construction industry safer, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has identified the four most common dangers to construction employees, identified as the “Fatal Four,” which includes: struck-by hazards, caught-between hazards, fall hazards, and electrocution hazards. This Caught-between Hazards: Construction’s Fatal Four training video specifically focuses on caught-between hazards and how best to avoid them.
“Caught-between,” or “caught-in,” hazards occur when someone is squeezed, pinched, or pinned between two or more objects. These incidents can easily cause death or serious bodily harm, including crushing injuries leading to amputation. Common examples of “caught-in” or “caught-between” hazards include being crushed between moving and stationary objects, becoming caught in a collapsed trench, getting caught in moving machinery, and being trapped under shifting structures. This course demonstrates how these hazards lead to injuries, and how construction workers can work safely to avoid injury.
While the construction industry is a dangerous one to work in, you can mitigate some of your risks through simple awareness. Be aware of the hazards your job may pose and be aware of how you can best avoid those hazards. These are simple steps; there is no need to make a dangerous job even more dangerous by being ignorant of your surroundings. Utilize the information presented in this safety training lesson and learn how to avoid the first of construction’s Fatal Four.
