Driving: Heavy Trucks: Managing Space

It takes a lot of concentration and awareness on a driver’s part to safely manage the space around a heavy truck. Most problems occur when a truck driver tailgates another vehicle, so managing the space in front of the truck is extremely important.

Our heavy truck training video gives truckers an easy formula to use to judge whether they are following too closely, and provides examples of how to figure out how much space to leave between the truck and the vehicle in front of it. Viewers also get tips for dealing with tailgating vehicles. Other space-management suggestions include staying centered in the lane, avoiding driving beside other vehicles, and ensuring adequate overhead clearance. The training provides guidance on safely making left-hand turns and avoiding right-turn collisions. Drivers are reminded that the space under their vehicles can also pose problems. This video is suitable for new and experienced drivers.
