Laboratory Safety: Planning for Laboratory Emergencies
Human beings and hazardous chemicals are a volatile mix. No matter how careful laboratory workers are, mishaps happen. Knowing how to respond to fires, chemical spills, explosions, vapor releases, and natural disasters will help keep laboratory workers as safe as possible.
This training video reviews the essentials: being familiar with the lab’s written emergency response plan, understanding the use of fire extinguishers and their rating systems, reviewing and heeding the advice of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), using proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including air purifying systems, drop-and-roll to extinguish burning clothing, how to use emergency eyewash stations and safety showers, and most importantly, knowing when to call for help.
Evacuating personnel from affected work areas, confining fires and spills, controlling the migration of vapors, and decontaminating surfaces, tools and PPE, and properly disposing of wastes are all discussed in this Video On Demand. It is only a matter of time before everyone who works in a lab will confront an emergency situation. Figuring out what to do when a situation is in progress is not a safe or proper response. Use this online training video to demonstrate to your laboratory employees how to correctly respond to an emergency situation.
This course has been updated to include GHS container labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for GHS compliance.
