Electricity can cause shocks, burns and electrocution. Electrocution is the fourth leading cause of death in the construction industry. This online safety training course discusses the dangers posed by electricity and teaches workers what they can do to prevent electrical injury and death.
OSHA uses the acronym BE SAFE to define six general types of electrical hazards. BE SAFE stands for Burns, Electrocution, Shock, Arc flash, Fire, and Explosions. OSHA has identified the most common ways workers can be exposed to them, such as contact with overhead lines, contact with energized sources, and improper use of cords and connectors.
Viewers are shown ways to work safely around power lines, for example, by using a fiberglass instead of metal ladder and by keeping enough distance between themselves and the power line. This course also emphasizes the importance of inspecting tools and equipment to check for cracked housings, missing parts, and corrosion. Cords should be inspected for fraying, cracked insulation, and exposed wires.
