You have probably heard someone say “it’s not the fall that gets you, it’s the sudden stop at the end.” Depending on your industry, working at heights is inevitable, and falling is an inherent risk. Depending on the height, a fall may be fatal. With proper use of your fall arrest system, however, you can help prevent injuries and the sudden stop at the end. This training lesson shows you how to correctly use a personal fall arrest system to do just that.
There are three main components of the fall arrest system: an anchor point, a connecting device, and a full body harness. Each is integral to the successful operation of the system; proper usage is determined by OSHA guidelines. For example, the anchor point and connecting device, which connects the anchor point to the body harness, must be able to support 5,000 pounds of dead weight per person. Each connecting device must also be equipped with a double-locking snap hook.
This course demonstrates the proper use of the system, as well as several other key elements to keeping you safe; including how to limit your fall distance, how to prevent common fall arrest mistakes, how to inspect the connecting device, how to use fall limiting devices, and how to prevent sudden stop injuries.
It’s simple physics, the higher you are when you fall, the more damage you will do to yourself. Utilize the information presented in this concise training course and learn how to properly use your fall arrest system to survive a fall, should one occur.
