Accidents involving drivers using cell phones have reached epidemic proportions. In fact, someone who uses a cell phone while driving is 4 times more likely to get into a crash and a person texting while driving is 8 times more likely to get into a crash. This online safety training course features Jacy Good, a young woman who lost both parents due to negligent driving. Jacy still suffers today from the effects of brain damage and loss of mobility from the accident, which was caused by a driver using a cell phone.
Viewers of this online training course learn how using cell phones while driving causes the driver to experience inattention blindness. This is when the driver’s eyes are on the road, but their mind is elsewhere and isn’t taking in the information. According to the National Safety Council, research has shown our eyes normally scan back and forth while driving, but while on the phone our eyes stop scanning. Drivers with inattention blindness don’t see almost 50% of what they should be seeing, causing them to run red lights and stop signs, miss exits, and drift out of their traffic lane.
Watch this video, and make the roads safer by refusing to use your cell phone while driving, and demanding other drivers do the same.
