Safety showers and eye washes are emergency equipment used in case of an exposure to harmful chemicals while on the job. Prior to any accidents employees should be familiar with safety showers and eye washes, including knowing where they are located and how to use them. The video explains the maintenance of safety showers and eye washes as well as how to properly use them.
The video demonstrates proper procedures for using safety showers and eye washes; this safety equipment should be used for at least fifteen minutes. If an employee has to use a safety shower their clothing should be drenched and removed. When an employee has to use an eye wash they should open their eye(s) wide and rinse for fifteen minutes. These are only preemptive emergency steps and employees should seek medical attention as soon as possible after their skin has come in contact with any chemical.
In order for safety showers and eye washes to work properly they have to be maintained. Maintenance includes periodic stress tests done by site managers and routine checks, such as making sure the water is potable and flowing at full capacity. Another part of maintenance is making sure there aren't any obstacles near the safety equipment. Obstacles could be work equipment, brooms, or mops. There should be a clear path to safety showers and eye washes at all times.
Use this online training video to prepare employees to use safety showers and eye washes in the event of a chemical exposure.
